Combining short braking distances on wet and dry roads with low rolling resistance has always been considered highly problematic by reputable tyre developers. The new ContiEcoContact 5 from Europe's leading tyre manufacturer Continental resolves this problem with apparent ease. However, the tyre engineers had to break new ground in terms of all the tyre elements - casing, compound, tyre contour and tread pattern design - to achieve the high level of progress attained when compared with the previous model. Rolling resistance was reduced by 20%, for example, and mileage performance raised by 12%, whilst still managing shorter braking distances on wet roads. A car fitted with the new ContiEcoContact 5 tyres can therefore use around 3% less fuel than the same vehicle equipped with standard tyres.

Rolling resistance is caused by the deflection and rebound of the tyres during driving. The main target conflicts when reducing this relate to the safety-relevant characteristics of a tyre. The conflict between rolling resistance and handling can be influenced via the design, whilst the tyre compound can assist in the problem area of low rolling resistance and short braking distances in the wet; a different tyre contour can improve mileage performance and the tread pattern can have a positive effect on braking characteristics in the wet. The sum total of the potential advances then helps the new tyre to achieve a considerably better overall performance with even more balanced driving characteristics.
